Weaner Growth Performance

Lindsay, manager of Awakino Station wants 72% of his weaners to reach a 70 kg live weight for sale from 2015 onwards.

Tactics/Actions:

  • Keep the R2’s separate from the main mob until their second fawning; mating them separately as well
  • Use advantage feeders to help fawns transition through weaning
  • Condition score and weigh hinds at weaning and scanning
  • Preferential feeding of light hinds from weaning and scanning
  • Identify and link the poor weaners/poor hinds by using head colour on the weaners when they come through the yards the first day at pre wean T.B. test.

Success Criteria:

  •  72% of sale weaners with average live weight of 70kg
  •  All retained wapiti X weaners at 90kg live weight for killing pre-christmas

Factors that need to be observed to measure the impact of change:

  • Monitoring and recording Hind condition and weight at weaning and scanning
  • Percenatge of hinds that are light
  • Number of poor weaners and linkage to their mothers
  • Scanning results
  • Weaning percentage
  • Fawn weaning weights and range
  • Daily growth rate of weaners

Also good to know:

Lindsay has 900 hinds that produce 850 weaners. He usually sends 600 out of the 850 to sale.
