Weaner Growth Performance

Mark Ivey of Glentanner Station wanted to increase the growth rate of his weaners. Suggestions were made to BCS the hinds then supplmentary feed hinds and weaners in late lactation to increase growth rates
Aim – To consistently produce 60kg weaners at the start of May, to wean 90% or more and to reduce the ongoing running costs of our system.

Tactics/Actions:
  •  Good quality terminal genetics and plenty of quality feed with the addition of supplement pre weaning will be undertaken
  •  Dry hinds will be targeted for culling, and an annual draft will occur
  • Self feed silage pit and grain station will be provided
Management Tools
  •  Broadcasting some better clovers over the flatter blocks which are opened up to hinds and fawns post January
  •  Self feed pit
  •  Advantage grain feeders allowing the separate mating of first fawning hinds
Capital Requirements
  •  Building of self feed pit
  •  Purchase of stationary grain feeders
  •  Additional hill fencing (possibly)
Success criteria
A 60kg average weaning weight, from a 90% drop

Outcome/Results:
Results as at April was on track to have the best crop of weaners by average weight that Mark had seen on the property -so positive outcome from supplementing hinds late lactation
