Improving Fawn Survival

By June 2016 Glen and Renee Harrex want to increase fawn survival to sale rate from 88% to 92%.

Aim: to increase fawn survival to sale rate from 88% to 92%.

Tactics/Actions:

Glen and Renee hope to achieve this by:

  • Utilising dry land area to calve
  • Having lower stocking density
  • Lower disruption and
  • Better fencing

A cost benefit of fencing 80Ha of dry land will be undertaken.  Attention to high density areas  will be given with the aim of reducing fawn misadventure.

Change will be demonstrated by monitoring the following points:

  1. Monitoring survival of weaner numbers
  2. Track fawning percentage on dry land fawns versus fixed grid or k-line irrigation
  3. Capital cost estimations will be undertaken and gross margins for the new systems will be compared.

Outcome/Results:
